Diet Tracker Privacy Policy
This policy explains how the Diet Tracker app (“the app”), made by Walrus Operations (“we”, “us”), handles your information. It applies to the app on Android and Linux.
Summary: the app doesn't use accounts, analytics, ads or tracking, and Walrus Operations doesn't collect or store your data. Your data is stored on your device, and in your Dropbox account if you turn on sync.
1. What we collect
The app doesn't have user accounts and doesn't include analytics, advertising or tracking code. Walrus Operations doesn't operate servers for the app and doesn't collect, receive or store personal or usage data from it.
2. Data stored on your device
The foods you log, your recipes, your weight entries and your settings are stored only on your device, in a local database. Automatic backups of that database are also kept on your device. This data isn't sent to Walrus Operations.
3. Optional Dropbox sync
Sync is off unless you turn it on. If you do:
- You sign in to Dropbox through Dropbox itself. The app never sees your Dropbox password.
- The app uploads its database to your Dropbox account, inside a dedicated app folder (
Apps/). The app can only access that folder, not the rest of your Dropbox. - The Dropbox access token that lets the app reach that folder is stored only on your device.
- Walrus Operations doesn't have access to your Dropbox account or the synced data.
Data you sync is held by Dropbox under the Dropbox privacy policy.
4. Optional barcode lookup
When you scan a barcode to look up a product, the app sends only the barcode number to:
- Open Food Facts, a free, open food database (Open Food Facts privacy policy); and
- USDA FoodData Central, only if you have added your own free FoodData Central API key in the app's settings (USDA privacy policy). The request includes your key, as the service requires.
No other information from the app, such as your food log or weight, is sent with these lookups. As with any internet request, these services can see your device's IP address. If you never use barcode lookup, the app does not contact them.
Your USDA API key is stored in the app's settings. Because settings are part of the app's database, the key is included when you sync to Dropbox.
5. Camera
The app uses the camera only to read barcodes while you are scanning. Camera images are processed on your device to read the barcode, and aren't saved or sent.
6. Reminders and CSV export
Reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device. No server is involved.
CSV export happens only when you start it, and the file goes only to the place you choose. What happens to an exported file after that is up to you.
7. Deleting your data
Your data is stored on your device and, if you use sync, in your Dropbox account. To delete it:
- Clear your data from within the app, or uninstall the app, which removes its database and on-device backups.
- If you used sync, also delete the app's folder in your Dropbox (under
Apps/). You can disconnect the app in your Dropbox account settings as well.
Walrus Operations doesn't hold a copy of your data.
8. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13. As described above, Walrus Operations doesn't collect personal information from users of the app, including children.
9. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
